THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Like all the skulls, created in extreme bas relief, the SEVEN have the unique facility of being a wall hung sculpture yet still present as a piece in the round.
Working on the Skull One in 2015 and keen to make a larger version, I used mold No.13 to cast a piece in a polyurethane elastomeric compound and enlarged it in an alchemical manner. Once cast, immersed in water it enlarges. Like ‘sea monkeys’ from old comics it grew, till finally forming a larger than life duplicate.
Reworking of original to give it more weight and ‘gravitas’ and the new mold emerged.
The Magnificent Seven, in polished stonecast and a Limited Edition of Seven individual skulls in white bronze are available.
Material and Measurements
The Magnificent Seven are cast in Hydrostone. A gypsum/cement art casting and replication material. Though more difficult to work than the standard ‘go to’ for museum statuary , Hydrocal, I favor the heft and dense nature of Hydrostone which serves my wax finishing processes better. Each casting is tooled, heavily waxed and polished. An aluminum sleeved hole is installed for hanging.
The proportions of each piece are approx. 11” by 7.5” by 3” deep weighing approx 9 lbs or 3 kilos.
In order to hang the Seven as exhibited a wall of at least 12 feet is required.
