In the early nineties, working in encaustic, I visited an exhibition on the Celts in Venice that would fundamentally change my view of history and brought celtic symbolism into my work. Over time as I aged so did the past and the Celts became modern in the face of things older.
In 2012 I was fortunate to win the annual lottery and be at the 5,200 year old Newgrange for the solstice dawn. A journey in the dark to Brú na Boinne, palace of the goddess, where such rites were held for over five millennia. Before Stonehenge, before Pyramids and way before the Celts. Humbling yet inspiring.
The solitary triple spiral carved into stone of the inner chamber has global renown. It took me till 2025 to engage with it. It was a dark year all round, accompanied by deep personal loss. During these times, often unable to think, lost in an underworld, I worked on the spiral. A near daily ritual of traveling the twofold labyrinth, down one , up another, moving always round the path, finding a way, staying true to the line.
I can’t count the time, days, revolutions but this image captures an early rendition. Perhaps the best. Time moves along and up and around.
‘Spiral’ and ‘spiraling’ became ubiquitous of late touting loss of control. Historically it was something else altogether. The cosmos, the spiritual, mathematical inspiration. Whirling galaxy’s and seas of Sufis.
3,000 years before Rome, 4,500 years before ‘shamrock’ the Irish knew well their starry nights and swirling trinitys.

In my early days in NYC I worked for some of the Saturday Night Live crew, many of whom are Canadian including the boss, Lorne. Along with other Canadian comedic troupes they were the backbone of American humor. Through the years many wonderful Canadians, Bruce, Howard, Don, Dave, Lan, JeanLuis, neighbours, in-laws and friends.
This piece is a doff of the hat to their decency, politeness, noblesse and indisputable good humor.

First born as mascots at our club night Macaco in banners and print back in 1992. I made many versions of the Four Monkeys since, pastels, encaustics and bas reliefs. They graced the front door of my studio downtown Manhattan till 2002.

An iconic Rod of Asclepius, symbol of the Greek god of health and healing, who along with his daughters Hygieia, Aegle, Panacea et al heralded healthcare for the ancients. The Asklepieia, teaching hospitals, founded throughout the ancient world educated the luminaries Galen and Hippocrates.
My own questioning spark was how in the world did the Caduceus, symbol of Mercury, patron saint of thieves, communication, business, supplant Asclepius as the recognized symbol of health in America. The answers; the Spanish American war, battling requisition officers, oneupmanship, nohadic law, American politics and alchemical mysteries both intrigue and beguile. His mid century removal from the Hippocratic oath a sad revisionism. Fundamentally a great conversation piece, one to be had amongst the healers.
Begun in 2012 I determined to create a Rod of Asclepius for the 21st century. After dozens of versions, each an evolution, each demold a shedding of yet another skin it is complete, sublime in form and touch, the image captures it perfectly.

I wanted to make some beautiful music but I’m no musician. I hope this suffices. Recently resurrected for a final refinement, I love its operatic tone against the black plane, like a lost chord on a polished baby grand.
